Frequently asked questions:
1. At what age can my child start?
Our experience has shown that children ages 4 and up will be able to take the greatest advantage from our martial arts classes. Starting at age four, your child can participate in our Pre-Karate Kubs program, which allows our instructors to work with them one on one and evaluate their readiness for group classes.
2. What types of Martial Arts do you teach?
We focus on Taekwondo as the primary martial art. Taekwondo originated in Korea and emphasizes kicks more than other martial arts, making it ideal for improving your child's balance, flexibility, and endurance. In addition to improving your child's physical abilities, your child will also be learning valuable Abduction Awareness and self-defense skills. These are some of the key skills that we teach with our Safety-Net Kids and Pre-Karate Kubs program.
3. Is Taekwondo safe for my child?
Taekwondo is safe and fun for students of all ages and physical abilities. Classes are taught by expert instructors as students are shown techniques in a step-by-step manner at their own pace. A thorough stretching routine, matted flooring, and protective safety equipment are all part of our commitment to ensuring each student's safety.
4. Does Taekwondo teach aggressiveness?
Absolutely not! Your child and each student is taught from the very first lesson that true TaeKwonDo martial artists never misuse their martial arts skills. Throughout their training, students are reminded that being physically and mentally tough does not allow one to be tough with others. Instead, Taekwondo students are expected to be courteous, respectful and careful about when and where they practice their skills. They are taught that our martial arts are also a form of exercise and self improvement, not a tool for bullying.
5. Can I take classes with my child?
Definitely. Many families are finding our martial arts classes to be the perfect family activity. It combines an exciting workout with a new learning experience. You have your choice of attending children's and adults' classes or coming together to our Family Class. Either way you'll have a great time and create a special family bond. The "Family that Plays together Stays Together". Our belt ranking system used allows all students to train at their own pace and improve their physical condition and skill gradually. As each student progresses through the ranking system, he or she will receive a beautiful certificate that can be proudly framed showing his/her new accomplishment.
6. Do you have membership fees?
We have membership programs that should fit anyone's budget. As a member of the American Martial Arts Institute you are not required to pay annual membership dues. If you wish to compete in the Amateur Athletic Union (separate from AMAI) there is a small membership fee. Visit our school to see what we can offer you today. We are sure you will be excited to see what we can do for you and your family.
7. Where are you located?
We are located in Brookhaven Village Shopping Center at 3750 W. Robinson St., Suite #120, in Norman, OK. The school is in the former location of Massay's DanceStar Productions studio (behind Starbucks and next to Sylvan Learning Center). There are entrances on the East and West side of the building and plenty of parking. Our Academy is very spacious and its special design and location affords our students much privacy during instruction.
8. I understand that adult students and parents of students can train on your exercise equipment for free, is that true?
Yes. All adult students and parents of students can train/work out on the new exercise equipment in our facility. If you or your child is enrolled in class, you can use the equipment for FREE while your child is in class. Adult students can use the equipment prior to or after their taekwondo class, but cannot use the equipment during their martial arts class. They must attend class.
